uh pyxis...you do know the full name of Jesus is Jesus CHRIST...right?

Christmas traditionally commemorates his birth.

Saint Nicholas (Father Christmas) comes from as crolly says a Scandinavian/Russian heritage.

The name and reason of celebration have been appropriated by the Christians and now it has become secularized like every other major Christian festival.

Its older name was Saturnian (in the roman times) and there were other festivals by various pagans around this time of year (Winter solstice).

The council of Nicaea decided to create this Christian celebration so that it would cover up the pagan holidays (and eclipse their culture gradually).....that council also decided which books would make biblical canon and preserved the roman priesthood amongst other things.
