By clearing out pakistan....I mean taking a really tough stance and allowing US troops to pursue taliban and al qaeda militants across the border....not a full scale invasion like that of Afghanistan.

The condition of hot pursuit should have been extracted from Pakistan right when the with us or against us (and the associated threat of bombing them to the stone age) demand was made....or at least soon after.

But during the Bush administration, this was never done.....too much faith was put into Pakistan to do its job on its side of the border....and now you have a president that will never even think of raising the issue with the pakistanis....much less enforce it.

Bush didnt realise the reason why Pakistan cooperated before with Reagan...was that the enemy then was truly a common enemy. This does not hold true for the Taliban and Al Qaeda......two sources of militants/terrorists Pakistan itself has used against its neighbours....and the fact that with the Taliban in power.....Afghanistan was Pakistans strategic backyard.

The rise of the subsequent anti pakistani leaders in afghanistan (from various factions and the "northern alliance")....also led to Pakistani elem, tns giving covert support to taliban elements on both sides of the border.

Bush realised too late what was happening...or he knew about it and chose for whatever reason not to act in the appropriate way. When he did...it was too little too late (US drone strikes).

Mind you Pakistan itself has realised (waaay to late) what supporting terrorism in the past means in the present....it took them long enouigh....but with India having militarised Kashmir and the US and NATO in Afghanistan.....the militants are being kept in Pakistan....and they are turning against their former masters......because they aren't big fans of waiting and twiddling their thumbs.
