Pretty much. What we're looking at here is a significant decrease in the US armed forces ability to achieve and maintain air superiority in the decades to come, essentially nullifying the superiority enjoyed by them in the F-15 era back to being on technological par with the enemy along the lines of the F-4 era. Though there will still be Raptors around, with these numbers it'll hardly be enough to accomplish much more than point operations.

The F-35 is a good plane, but it can't match the F-22 in air-to-air. F-35s are good because they're VTOLs and are radar invisible. BUT they're also meant for ground-attack. As said on fighter-planes.com: "USAF-Multi-role aircraft (primarily air-to-ground) to replace F-16 and A-10 and to complement F-22". This is a designated ground attack jet, not a replacement for the F-15.

Oh, I'm sure the PoC F-35 is well capable of replacing the F-15.

The crackpots claim there is no need for the F-22. Um yes there is. To replace those ageing F-15's. Cant hang on to them forever.

The 2448 f-35s mentioned represent the total planned US purchase, with 480 going to the navy, 340 going to the USMC and the remaining 1628 aircraft going to the USAF.

That's the planned total though.

but they'll do it better than most other birds out there.....

As for the square mileage.....lets remember that there are also "only" about 200 strike eagles in operation with the USAF. These also have commitments abroad.

it's not that many. think of the USA in square miles. then consider it's commitments in the pacific and elsewhere abroad.

all the f-35s should fill the gap. they just won't get there as quickly...or as high

leo mentioned that we are getting 187 f-22's

2443 f-35s will be produced. this number, i assume includes all our partners in the program.

so the USAF will without a doubt have a very formidable fighter force. one that will be un-matched globally.

we can only assume that billions are being saved for upcoming UCAV projects that will come online and fill a large proportion of our force around the time we plan on retiring...maybe before?

the f-22 has been so long coming that it's not as special as it used to be.

it's a great shame though. it's without a doubt the most capable fighter aircraft in the world. a squadron of these can send a massive message to someone you don't like

The American Secretary of Defense Gates, announced today the end to the F-22, C-17, and the CSAR is likely dead.

A 2 billion $US increase in UAVs.

He canceled the VF-71 6.5 billion $US presidential helicopter program for 23 new presidential helicopters. An replacement effort will restart in 2011.
